CEBP offers 9 levels of French as a foreign language courses, ranging from level A1 to C1.
For more information on these 9 levels, please consult the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
General French courses
All courses offered at CEBP are in line with the CECRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Thus, the school offers several class levels, ranging from A1 to C1.
The teaching method used is communicative and action-based.
Tests are given twice a term:
Once in mid-session, on the 7th week, where an assessment of the covered material is offered.
Once at the end of the session, on the 14th week, where a general exam covering the totality of the level’s skills is offered.
The courses are based on the Edito collection published by Didier, with teachers free to bring in their own documents to supplement the course.
In addition to the general courses, the school offers refinement courses designed to improve students' skills, as well as a personalized tutoring service.
Level A1
Level A1 courses give students the tools they need to understand and use everyday vocabulary in simple statements aimed at satisfying concrete needs.
The learner will understand very simple messages related to his or her immediate familiar environment or to situations pertaining to everyday life.
They will also be able to distinguish all French sounds, acquire comprehensible pronunciation and begin to discover the basic structures of spoken and written language.
The learner will be able to communicate simply in everyday situations, such as at work or at home.
Level A2
Level A2 courses give students the tools to communicate in immediate areas of proximity, and to exchange information on familiar, everyday topics in a simple, straightforward manner.
More specifically, the courses develop oral comprehension of frequently used expressions related to their immediate environment or work.
They’ll distinguish a variety of commonly used phrasing that will enable them to reinvest the grammatical and lexical notions they’ve studied through written expression activities.
This level of teaching encourages learners to participate in their own learning by rereading or checking out a book from our in-school library.
Level B1
Level B1 courses enable the student to produce simple, coherent discourse on familiar topics and in areas of interest.
They can recount an event and briefly give reasons or explanations for a project or an idea.
These courses enable the learner to achieve a new degree of language awareness while learning new grammatical and syntactical lessons and acquiring the most commonly used language mechanisms and turns of phrase.
Level B2
Level B2 courses provide students with the tools they need to develop a clear, coherent discourse on topical subjects, as well as to understand authentic audio or audiovisual material in its entirety and in detail.
These courses aim to enable students to express themselves easily, spontaneously and grammatically correctly on any subject. They also aim to allow the learner to present and/or reformulate a problem, to explain and justify a point of view and to lead a debate.
Level C1
C1 level courses provide students with the material they need to perfect a more correct and nuanced use of the French language.
They enable the learner to understand various recorded or broadcast documents, even in non-standard language, to follow a conference, a lecture, a discussion or a debate, even if the structure is not apparent, and to recognize idiomatic expressions whilst appreciating changes of register.
These courses aim to help the learner perceive the deeper meaning of a piece of writing, understand the perspective from which it was written, grasp the details of long, complex texts, whether polemical or not, and interpret the implicitly stated. A variety of media are used.
The language studied is written and spoken in different registers, and the form ranges from the common to the literary.
